This young osprey had either been unsuccessful returning to the nest or injured itself on an early flight and was perched on a large boulder beside the highway in the Kootenays just south of Nakusp. It is puffed up to as large as it can get to intimidate me into leaving. Out of respect I only snapped a couple of images and scooted.

Daybreak we woke up at a truck stop after crossing the border from Washington State into B.C. late the night before. As we got closer, the mist mountains grew taller and waters crystal blue. Our first taste of this trip was Vermilion Crossing in Kootenay National Park on our way to Banff.

I’m a born and raised Albertan, and always been active in one respect or another - taking advantage of our mountains for Skiing, camping and casual hikes over the years. I finally came to realize that I’d never completed a summit on any mountains worth noting, and so I decided along with 3 other friends that this mountain would be my first. It was quite a challenge, but as you can see the views were amazing! It was well worth the effort, and I an experience I’ll never forget. Mt Sparrowhawk’s summit sits at around 10,250ft (approx).

We decided to tackle the steep trail to Ha Ling Peak in an attempt to catch the sunrise. The entire ascent was on one side of the mountain which was part of a valley of peaks. The trees shrouded any view and there wasn’t much to see even after we had past the treeline. The last few hundred meters were filled with scree and as we finally reached the peak, this was the first thing we saw and it all immediately became worth it.

During a 20km cross-country ski trek, we paused while passing a bridge to take in the scenery around us, and capture the moment with a camera. This is Banff & the Rocky’s at it’s finest.
